Fragonard is very interesting for both the spectator and the creator. He seeks to delight and please the one who receives his message, it is almost innate but the student finds this fluency and sensitivity framed and organized, with no shocks in a perfect compositional scheme where the balance covers many aspects, nothing is missing or redundant, a well-rounded compositional line is balanced by a bright, cheerful colour which moves us, a geometry which could appear cold is softened by firm but free brushstrokes, fruit of the great talent of a painter who trained himself by painting and copying other great talents and whose contribution to the world of art was as great as the injustice of art historians who treated him as second class for no reason except their own prejudices.
Fragonard has the greatness of that which seems easy. If we had to define what his work transmits we would say he is a painter in whom everything ‘shines’ and his vitality and beauty infect us and fascinate us.
